The Island School

Bainbridge Island, Washington

Project Details

The Island School is a unique, private school offering an exceptional education for kindergarten through fifth grade. The campus is open, airy, and a very special place for young children to learn.

Phase I was an addition and complete remodel of this private 115-student K-5 school. We began this project by conducting a series of consensus planning workshops with staff and parents to create a plan for the school's major modernization and additions. Our challenge was to more than double the building's footprint and completely reorganize its interior spaces while preserving the intimate character and integrity of the existing facility.

Phase II design work included a light-filled, multi-purpose room seating 350 for programs and PE, ADA accessibility, natural materials  to complement the wooded setting, and design details that preserve the intimate scale of the school.
